Jeremy Vanterpool is a gifted saxophone artist born and raised in the British Virgin Islands, on the beautiful island of Tortola. Following family lines that love, appreciate and excel in various “creative arts”, Jeremy embraced the same from a very tender age.
He first channeled his passion for music ,singing with his four siblings. This would soon be extended to singing in church with the Youth Choir and the Acappella Fellas (with whom he still performs). Those experiences introduced Jeremy to an eclectic blend of traditional, contemporary, jazz, gospel, negro spiritual, fungi, and calypso styles. As a result, he quickly developed a musical ear and song arranging abilities for both instruments and voice.
The Elmore Stoutt High School (Formerly the BVI High School) dawned a new era in Jeremy’s musical voyage, where he started learning the saxophone as a student. Through inspiration from music teachers such as Arthur Selwood, J. Herbeck, Andre’ Braithwaite, Kamau Georges and Mrs. Lelia Burke, he continuously strived to improve his skills. During his high school journey, the saxophonist successfully completed the Royal School of Music examinations for grades 4-8 for Alto Saxophone and Music Theory (with Merits and Distinctions). He gives credit to the BVI High school for the administration of an excellent music program.
Jeremy’s post high school experiences would prove to be as equally instrumental in his musical development. His tertiary educational pursuits relocated him to the United States bringing him to the steps of schools in Georgia and North Carolina.
In 2005, Jeremy was introduced to Steve Dancz, a Pianist, Composer and Director of the Jazz Studies Program at the University of Georgia. Dancz, who worked as a record producer and A&R director during the years he was based in Los Angeles, composed and conducted orchestral scores for television ("Designing Women") and motion pictures ("Grim Prairie Tales" starring James Earl Jones). He quickly became one of Jeremy’s mentors. Recognizing Jeremy’s tenacity and genuine love for the saxophone, Dancz introduced his eager student to Dave D’Angelo (Alto Saxophonist of the world renowned Section 8 Jazz Combo), who taught and mentored the young saxophonist. Jeremy quickly seized the opportunities presented and joined various jazz combos and bands while in Georgia.
In 2006, he shared the stage with the increasingly popular soprano saxophonist Jeff Sparks in Atlanta, Georgia. In a brief conversation, Sparks emphasized, “As a musician, when performing, always stay connected to your audience”. Taking this advice, complemented with his own style and background, Jeremy continued to display a level of passion for his music, which is clearly evident in his performances. Overall, his US stint allowed him the privilege to perform throughout Georgia, North Carolina, and at many more Continental US venues, as far as Brooklyn, New York in 2007.
Jeremy has now returned to the British Virgin Islands and continues to be a professional in the capacity of a saxophonist and an employee of the BVI Government. Over the years he has garnered added inspiration from his numerous role models, family and friends that continue to support all of his musical pursuits. He continues to perform and impress audiences in the BVI and throughout the Caribbean.
Following a streak of notable saxophone players in the British Virgin Islands, Jeremy identifies key saxophone mentors and favorite players as Kamau Georges, Drexel Glasgow, Alton Bertie, Dalan Vanterpool, Arturo Tappin, Dean Fraser, Mark Bunney, J. Herbeck, Dave D’Angelo, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, Charlie Parker, Dave Koz, Najee, Grover Washington Jr., Everette Harp and many others.
In his saxophone career, Jeremy states, "Humility, hard work and acknowledging that gifts are God-given is a necessity for further growth as an individual and as a player. It is my goal to continuously elevate to higher heights of mastering the saxophone and musical excellence." The Sky Is Definitely The Limit For This Soulful Sax Player!
